Now is a good time to mention that I am about to hit the one year mark of this version of Poem-A-Day. I've been debating what I want from this thing and have found myself deciding to alter how these work.
So...the project will continue, but I'm going offline.
I will still post 2-3 poems a week on here, but the majority of the poems will live in a physical, handwritten form. This is to free up the project from the constraints of blogger and to give me a bit of breathing room to explore posting more essay-type things on this blog.
I may start posting more of them to Instagram or Twitter as a result. We will see.
I Look Terrible In Photos
In every photo of myself I am a tree , arms reaching out their wires attempting to dig a wall , being a tree in photographs results in a body that is constantly a seedling , it never fruits , always in flower , I remember the smallness of the earth and the press of roots but there is little calling from the sun , it is an orb in the sky that will not quit smiling , a cruel thing that , the camera an eye unblinking ( an image no one has thought of before ) , a shield pitted with arrows , here are the results of the capturing , the soul is iced and held and in constant summer clothing , eyes will never catch the glint of the stars because the stars are forever behind the blueness of daylight , the sun has won here and the wooden feeling in the body has as well , in every damn photo I stand there with a hunch and the arms of a dead man , it laughs in its suit and tie , the blue of blood pops in the black and white of the moment , here everyone , an offering .

Poem-A-Day #326 : Broken Poem
Broken Poem
Your zoology is confusing
A tongue on your skin - mine - in the creases of your arm
Let the broken blood be the broken glass
A light comes into the room - it is a ghost expressing discomfort with limes
Trees become fish for you
Scales leaf and collapse - they make a paste - they pop
Animals on our bodies and our mouths and our left parts
It spills and spills and spills
Cages erupt around the world - they fill and open - they burn
A missed connections ad on Craigslist mentions the figure of Orion
The arrows land in the yard
We chase the Chinese New Year and try to name the puddles
Squeeze citrus - squeeze eggs
There are things we can build and not build - nothing else

Poem-A-Day #265 : The Latest Poem About Violence That I Have Written
The Latest Poem About Violence That I Have Written
I often think about Matthew Shepard
and what the last thing he heard was
and I hope it was a bird or
wind in the leaves
Not the sound of his own skull
cracking like an egg
on the side of a bowl
But deep down I know that was what he heard - engulfing
the sound of bone becoming soft - islands drifting int he ocean of brain
and then becoming nothing
And I fear that sound
I sleep restless with that sound
I dream endlessly of that sound
I hope - at least - that he could see the stars

Poem-A-Day #144 : Upon the Spontaneous Invention of the Chariot
In 2004 I wrote a weird series of poems about the chariot and how the history of the transport is murky at best. This is one of the better ones and is placed in China. Which is one of the latter places to have a chariot 'invention' moment.
Upon the Spontaneous Invention of the Chariot (5/13/04)
In the fields and marsh lands of China
grasses root deep and jump beyond a man's head
filling the mind with ideas of the heavens
where a star blinks forgetfully
absent-mindedly and tremors with the idea
of projecting light alone

Face Of Stars
Face Of Stars 2/7
The face of the stars
is porcelain - cold painted warm
Lips frozen in a kiss
The eyes drip darkness
onto the universe - he is expanding
Is about to eat the world

27 September 2010
I've discovered a snag in my word of the day.
The e-mail with the days word arrived at 8:30PM in my inbox.
I am at work Sunday nights until after midnight.
SO
Monday will have 2 poems. One early, one late.
Mira (Francis Drake completes his trip around the world 1580) 9/26
The Concorde landed in Texas today
493 years to the day
that Francis Drake completed his
3-year trip around the world
And what monsters were found
at such high altitudes
floating belly up like otters among clouds
That night we were looking at the stars
and just below Pisces you pointed
the sea monster Cetus with its star Mira
demanding us to look
There is the beast that swallowed Jonas
The hunger of deep space must be gigantic
We will keep our noses down to avoid our fate
