On the Evening Before the Inauguration of the 45th President of the United States
The cold has sat on my face - holed up
in the caves of my sinuses
I sleep - wake
sit with the cat
an endless stream of movies runs by
I feel as though I am waiting for someone to come home
I have strange sentimental thoughts about an ex-boyfriend
and almost text him
but do not - and this proves something
I fall asleep and miss the sunset - it is the night and it is cold outside
the snow from last week melts and turns into mud
I found a patch of rust on the hood of my car this morning
a pock or orange-red amid the green - it is rough to the touch
it is probably spreading - I think about ways to patch it
Are there patches
I noticed that the cat is walking stiffly - that
age is creeping in him
Age is creeping everywhere
I math - I will be 39 in 2020 - the cat will be 17
will possibly not be here - will have turned into glass
On the eve of my 40th birthday will I know where I am
There is a progression of things - I told my class today
write towards the future
because whatever you write will date the second it is done
and the future needs you in ways the present does not
A moment of folding occurs
Tonight the world will go to sleep and I will not set an alarm
at 9:30 in the morning things will occur that I will not see
paths before us will have quietly lessened - and multiplied

Poem-A-Day #300 : On An Aging Cat
On An Aging Cat
He moves a little more careful
a sort of think-pause before settling
He stares into the sunlight
as it fills the living room with warm
Hungrier and restless
he is a shuffle about the house at night
He is drinking only from the bathtub
the blankets are never empty of him
Somehow he wants more lap
his claws less ready
He moves a little more careful
a sort of think-pause before settling
He stares into the sunlight
as it fills the living room with warm
Hungrier and restless
he is a shuffle about the house at night
He is drinking only from the bathtub
the blankets are never empty of him
Somehow he wants more lap
his claws less ready

Poem-A-Day #252 : Vision vs. Sight
Vision vs. Sight
Tesla stands at the edge of the canyon - a glacial scar -
he imagines a hollow earth - he imagines taking the stones and setting them upright in a circle - he imagines mining his own salt - he imagines breeding pigeons - he imagines the lizards standing on their hind legs and talking to him -
You island you - Tesla finds a smooth stone and tosses it into the space between edges - a gulf of air that swallows endlessly and never exhales -
The stone skips across the surface - it does - seven times -
And it ripples the sunset just so - the colors merging into a matte brown - an orange cat sits at Tesla's feet - there is a breeze -

Poem-A-Day #230 : Stray Cat
Stray Cat
I have felt not at home
within
and without
The universe is not a cold dead place
It is just cold
and mostly not alive
Our matter
coalesces around us
it speaks to us at night
in the sounds of houses settling
If I have a hand to hold
let it also be my own
I have felt not at home
within
and without
The universe is not a cold dead place
It is just cold
and mostly not alive
Our matter
coalesces around us
it speaks to us at night
in the sounds of houses settling

Poem-A-Day #148 : Invitation
A nice simple one.
Invitation (7/10/04)
The past
is a homeless cat on the doorstep
sleeping over the w-e-l-
As if -
it were calling to me
over the expanse of the threshold
It comes into the house
sneaking when the screen door
is left open

Poem-A-Day #71 : Drunk Poem
Drunk Poem
The dog is slobbering again - and the night is cold
it's May why is the night cold
I am an adult I feel like I'm 16 - I have never felt older
I recount the story of going to the concert
of the mosh pit and the elbows and how I retreated to the balcony
And there are nods - someone says 'but your hair is purple'
and there are more nods
And I remember the article about purple-haired poets
ow they were an example of the pseudo-liberal
not really woke white person - and - I - am unsure -
And the cat drags the baby bunny into the living room
and does not devour it
It fucks with the thing - until it is saved or dead
either way the night will repeat - because martinis
