A Cup of Coffee
The hands that touched these beans - they are sticky with the picking of the cherries - they are short and thick and calloused - this is a romanticized idea of 'the worker' it is held aloft by images of wrinkled sun-scarred faces missing teeth and wearing straw-based hats - it perpetuates through National Geographic correspondence from X Y Z - this wasn't supposed to go this way -
This cup was manufactured in China - was it pre or post 'we are now ok with this' China - is the ceramic kilned in some hive - the glaze is black and there is English on it telling us about the codes of hobos and the one that stands out is 'cranky woman or dog' - the image is a potato or a turd -
None of this is about the taste - it's too hot to drink the tendrils of steam off the surface are like those from hot springs - the white mist spends a time caressing the dark meniscus and then releases itself to feel the surrounds - it thinks it is free in this but then the weather realizes itself and the temperatures coincide and the white vanishes into nothingness - everythingness -
These are neither tender nor buttoned thoughts - this is a bitter drink - it feels as it goes down - the charcoal in the roast the turning in the barrel of that roaster - you can taste the flame on the gas - this is not Malaysian fat roasted coffee with its salt and butter and smoothness - this is edges - it is so very European despite being not at all European - and that is an important discussion on absorption to have as well -

Poem-A-Day #34 : Quilt for April 2 2016
Quilt for April 2 2016
The week old baby is asleep + I can’t help but
wish that the future is better his parents are there and we all kind of nod in
agreement – it’s dark + sad + maybe inappropriate but it’s the truest thing
that has ever happened
On
the last day of March it begins to snow + it continues into April + that line
about black boughs + cruelty echoes across the New Mexico landscape like a dirt
devil full of tumbleweeds
I
ask the woman behind the counter what I want there’s a silence between us that
would be hilarious if it wasn’t insane
The
pictures of the quilt across the National Mall the largest bed in the universe
– rest your head on Lincoln’s lap + stare into the dome of the sky + what sort
of dream is there in the circular night sky – is it a mirror of the day that
happened or one of the future
Wrap
the cloth around you and roll in the grass until everything is covered in green
until your skin is stained with life

Lying-ass Song
...Some things in this worldThat is how Terrance Hayes new book, How to Be Drawn*, ends. The lines seem to both soothe and to warn. They are almost a hex.
Do not depend on speech to be felt.
There is a listlessness in the end of winter. It's like the final days of illness when you are feeling better, have an appetite, even energy. But you are still hacking up phlegm and oozing from your nose. You may go back to work/school/etc. but you will be coughing like death for a few more days.
You might lose your voice.
How does one get back their lost voice?
Hook up a battery to it and jump?
Mid-semester and I am not writing. I'm editing, which is great, let's not get hysterical about this. But I am not producing new. It is easy to blame this on teaching. That I am spending a lot of brain-space on being creative in a different way.
The reality is that I get tired too easily.
I have very specific spaces that I am able to get creative work done in.
Mental and physical.
I need to be rested, but not too rested. Awake, but not over energized that I can't sit. Distracted by my surroundings just enough to go to that imagination place to make weird connections, but not too distracted that I start transcribing the lyrics tot he song playing or start live tweeting the conversations at the next table.
I need to have a jolt of creation, but not a jolt of someone else's energy.
If this all sounds like excuses. Well. It feels that way to me too. But these are the rules that my brain has given for the 'work' to commence.
Lately. It just hasn't.
That isn't to say I am out of ideas. I have mapped out a series of linked short stories. I've reworked bits of the novel-in-never-ending-progress. I organized a chapbook and printed a bunch of poems to try and pin together a manuscript. I even wrote a new poem the other day.
But it doesn't FEEL. And maybe this is a limit of that word. Or of the word 'work' or 'creativity' or or or or or.
I keep waiting to feel like I've turned a corner, or the ball is rolling, or something akin to that absolutely not able to be defined thing.
Maybe I'm waiting to be an 'adult'. Or a 'professional'. Or.
The Hayes quote above ends with this:
Remember too that the eyes are not flesh,
That crisis is initiated by the absence of witness,
That Orpheus, in time, became nothing
But a lying-ass song
Sung for the woman he failed.
It isn't that I am waiting.
It is that I am not sure I ever learned how to feel it when it gets here.
